Harwell Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery

I only recently came across this after looking on Google earth. I'd been to the church and noticed no war graves then spotted the cemetery on the map GE shows a big cross which I immediately recognize as the Commonwealth War Grave  site. It was not long before I headed back for a look.

View of the cross with three graves in front.

There are around 90 odd graves in this area

The airman were from different countries  and died a long way from their loved ones

This one though it not and is near the entrance to the cemetery I think she may have been a local girl brought back and buried here by her family.

Agatha Christie

Better go for one of the more famous in my collection and really need no introduction.

Strange how you can live somewhere and not know such a famous person lived nearby
She lived in Winterbrook in Cholsey near Wallingford in this house which I have walked and driven past many times, every day when I was an apprentice

A blue plaque can be seen by the front door and I've seen many people looking at it

There is a trail to walk which run's from Wallingford to where she is buried at St Marys in Cholsey and it you go looking for the grave it's over in the right hand corner of the churchyard. Rather than tell her life story Wickipedia can do a better job

I remember going to Henley and passing an old tramp who lived along the Fairmile, who's home seemed to be in the hedge to me, on going home at night you could see his fire still smoldering. One day I noticed he had gone and the place he lived no more. I wondered what became of him till one day in Henley Cemetery I chanced on this grave.
I could not say if it was the same person who was an ex solder. He was befriended  by a Freemason who found him on Remenham hill and helped back to his tent, Joe found the guy and a long friendship ensued. After he died the Freemason organized paid for the funeral. The grave is just inside the gates of the old main entrance on Bix Hill and the grave points to the road. Rest in Peace Joe.
